What is an LMS?
A learning management system (LMS) is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of electronic educational technology (also called e-learning) courses or training programmes.
The LMS we use at King's is called Totara which is a cloud based learning solution hosted by a company called Think Learning Ltd. The LEAP team manage the system day-to-day and provide support to staff at King's.
Internally at King's we named the LMS 'LEAP' which is a named designed to convey why we use it, which stands for;
L earn
E ducation
A ppraisal
P latform
We will therefore be referring to the LMS as LEAP.
How do we use LEAP to enable learning & development across the trust?
LEAP is the gateway for all our staff at King's across all sites to access all learning intervention as part of it's wider Learning & Organisational Development offering which includes:
- Compliance training (core & non-core)
- Professional Training and Legal Training
Training required to be up to date in one’s own professional field. - Soft Skills training
Soft skills refer to personality traits, social graces, communication, and personal habits that are used to characterize relationships with other people.
- Skills Training
Includes proficiencies needed to actually perform the job. For example, an administrative assistant might be trained in how to answer the phone. - Leadership Training
Leadership and management development pathway that supports staff working at all levels of their career. From those that are new to management, to those who are established leaders, we have a number of accredited and internally delivered programmes to support leaders and managers at King’s.
- Technical or Technology Training
Technical training is a type of training aimed to teach staff the technological aspects of the job. For example if our trust upgraded to a newer version of Microsoft Office, this might require some technical training of the entire workforce to ensure everyone uses the technology effectively.
Our LEAP Learning Management System allows staff to access our L&OD offering anytime, anywhere and on any device*.
Staff can:
- Self-enrol onto courses (if appropriate)
- Book themselves onto face-to-face training (if appropriate)
- Participate in virtual instructor-led training (usually via MS Teams)
- Access learning materials online like pre-work or self-directed learning
- View their training transcript and download certificates of completion
- Monitor compliance and completion rates and generate progress reports
Trust can:
- Host and manage compliance training
- Monitor training compliance across the organisation
- Monitor and adapt it's ILT training in response to attendance scores
- Assess and monitor evaluation to continually improve and evolve it's offering
- Report on training data for internal purposes and so we can evidence training offered, uptake, and completion rates to external bodies and regulators that we must report into.
What types of content can be hosted on LEAP?
LEAP can be used to host and support a variety of learning interventions including but not limited to:
- On-demand training (usually SCORM content [industry standard for courses authored and published in the form of eLearning])
- Standalone material including but not limited to:
- Documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF etc)
- Multimedia (Video, Animation, Image interactive games etc)
- Tests and assessment of learning
- Assignments
- Evaluation feedback
- Surveys
What evaluations types can be created?
We can create online evaluations for any type of training, be it:
- pre-training to assess existing knowledge
- online on-demand training (eLearning)
- post event
- Face-to-face ILT sessions (classroom based)
- Virtual ILT sessions (usually MS Teams based)
Can the evaluations be used to measure the impact of training?
Yes, the system has the capacity to offer evaluations up to level 3 based on the kirk Patrick model of training evaluation.
Level 1 evaluations – immediate response/reaction
Level 2 – knowledge related questions (before and after training course)
Level 3 – behaviour related questions
How can we tailor LEAP for our staff?
We’re able to offer course owners the following customisation options when setting up new courses:
- the course container can reflect the service/team brand, look, feel and colour scheme else we default to the KCH brand guidelines.
- We can customise course learning journeys and experiences by setting up or configurating the following options:
-
- Look and feel
- Course layout options
- Learning activity locking and restriction (example, learner can't access 'Object B' until 'Object A' is complete)
-
- We can also host third party learning material and/or resources providing:
-
- we have the permissions and the rights to from the content author
- it is compatible and can be hosted on LEAP
-
- We can customize course and classroom booking emails and notifications sent from the system or you stick to the King's standard templates.
- We can customise evaluations for example:
-
- pre-training to assess existing knowledge
- online on-demand training (eLearning)
- post event
-
- Face-to-face ILT sessions (classroom based)
- Virtual ILT sessions (usually MS Teams based)
-
-
- We maybe able to create reports to suit your requirements but these would scope and complete a feasibility check first.

Who should we contact in the LEAP support team if we have any questions?
In the first instance, we require all requests be formally submitted into the LEAP support desk portal here:
https://leapsupport.zendesk.com/hc/en-gb/requests/
This is so we can audit and monitor requests from initiation to resolution and also prioritise and respond to requests fairly.
